Spring Training Update 3/3

Luis Rengifo

Hope spring eternal! Baseball is back baby, and it's time to check up on our Brewer position battles.  We're one week into spring training, so it's time to overreact to some early performances.  Time to check up on our third base options, and see who is making a case for the opening day roster.

    The Hot Corner

We've got barely enough at-bats to even call it a sample size, but the biggest question mark that Brewers fans will be looking to find an answer for is who place third base.  Here's a quick update on the names and numbers we've seen through the first week of spring ball.

Luis Rengifo - He's got a .273 average with one home run and three RBIs in 11 at-bats.  Basically been exactly as advertised.

David Hamilton - Hamilton has four hits in 15 at-bats (a .267 average), with a pair of doubles and a stolen base.

Brock Wilken - Two singles in nine at-bats.  Might see him later this season, (very) long shot for opening day.

Luke Adams - A single and a triple in 10 at-bats.  And, unsurprisingly, four walks.

The Verdict - All signs point to the bulk of at-bats getting split between Rengifo and Hamilton, no real surprises.

    Let's Overreact!

Nothing like making snap judgements on early spring at bats.  Here's a few Brew Crew hitters that have been hitting the cover off the ball and clearly are going to be future hall-of-famers.

Well maybe not, but they could have a chance to contribute sooner than later in 2026.

Brandon Lockridge - Last season's trade acquisition has six hits in 11 at-bats, including a pair of home runs.  He's hitting .545, further muddying the waters on what the Brewers outfield is going to look like to start the season

Akil Baddoo - Speaking of muddying the outfield waters, free agent signee Akil Baddoo is hitting .455 in this way too early look at spring stats.  With two outfield spots locked up, Baddoo and Lockridge have a lot to prove this spring.

Luis Lara - No. 14 on the Brewer's prospect list, Lara is having a nice little spring so far.  With six hits in 19 at-bats, he's putting himself back on our radar after a solid 2025 in Double-A a season ago.

Tyler Black -  This is the YEAR!  Tyler Black will finally have an impact on the major league roster!  In 12 at bats this spring he's got eight hits - four of which were for extra bases - and eight RBIs.  Plus three steals to add on.  Could he challenge Jake Bauers for a roster spot?  Could he start in the outfield?  Could he be traded for spare parts?  We'll find out soon!

The Verdict - Outfield Depth may be less of a concern.  Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio are locks, Garrett Mitchell seems likely, as he's out of options and needs to create some trade value.  Baddoo has a leg up based on major league experience, but could Lockridge or Black sneak into a spot out of spring?  Time will tell.
